Get ready to meet the faces behind HMI in our new interview series, "Voices of HMI." Through these interviews, we'll introduce you to the diverse and dedicated individuals who make up our team.
HMI has partnered with Motivated Youth Academy (MYA) to provide refugee youth and adults with the opportunity to earn a U.S. high school diploma, gain valuable skills, and prepare for work and higher education. Together, we are opening doors for newcomers to build brighter futures in their new home.
HMI hosted a powerful and informative Know Your Rights listening session for our Afghan Newcomer Support Program (ANSP) clients at Crest Community Church in Riverside. This special gathering brought together newly enrolled and prospective ANSP participants, giving them the opportunity to connect with the ANSP team, meet their case manager, and learn more about the program’s resources and services in and around Riverside County.
Human Migration Institute hosted its annual World Refugee Day event on June 21, 2025,
bringing together community members, public officials and volunteers under this year’s theme:
“Love Over Fear,” which emphasized choosing support over silence for refugees.
From library visits to painting masterpieces, HMI’s second annual Summer Camp brought joy, learning, and connection to newcomer children in Riverside. With games, reading sessions, and art that will shine at our 10-year gala, this week was more than just fun—it was a celebration of growth, friendship, and community.
For the second year in a row, an HMI leader has been honored with the UC Riverside School of Education Alumni Excellence Award! 🎉
We are thrilled to celebrate Asma, a shining star in the HMI community and an inspiring young leader. Asma recently made history in her family by becoming the first woman to graduate high school in the United States—a milestone that marks just the beginning of her journey.
April 6th, 2025, for 22 participants in HMI’s Refugee Career Pathways (RCP) Program, was the start of a day full of firsts: their first time on a train, their first visit to Los Angeles, and their first chance to experience the city’s cultural landmarks not as outsiders—but as welcomed guests.
