Inland Empire Refugee Forum: Closing 2025 with Reflection, Community, and Commitment
The second Inland Empire Refugee Forum of the year, co-hosted by Human Migration Institute (Riverside County) and Lifting Humanity (San Bernardino County), brought the community together for a thoughtful and timely gathering centered on Afghan newcomers in the Inland Empire. As the final refugee forum of 2025, it served as an important moment to reflect on the year’s challenges, celebrate meaningful progress, and strengthen our shared commitment to supporting refugee families.
The discussion opened with acknowledgment of the recent tragedy affecting Afghan communities and the emotional and social impact it has had on newcomers across the region. A formal statement from the Inland Empire Afghan Refugee Community offered a powerful reminder of the resilience, grief, and unity within the community during this difficult time.
One of the forum’s most meaningful moments was a student representative’s speech on Afghan women’s education, highlighting both the urgency and the hope driving advocacy efforts today. Participants also shared community highlights and achievements, reminding us that progress continues even in challenging seasons.
State and county partners provided essential updates, including reports from the California Department of Social Services and the Department of Public Health, as well as detailed information on county-level program resources. These insights helped build a clearer understanding of the support systems available and the gaps we must continue to address.
To conclude the session, HMI team members led an engaging activity using “Refugee Challenge Cards,” inviting attendees to step into the shoes of a newcomer and navigate a simulated resettlement journey. The exercise encouraged empathy, awareness, and deeper understanding of the barriers many families face.
