Throughout this month, we reflect not just on history, but on the women we have the privilege of working alongside every day. Women whose strength, leadership, and care continue to shape our community in ways that are both visible and deeply felt.
This year, we were especially inspired by local women, including members of our own HMI community who were featured in Riverside Women Creating Change. Seeing their stories recognized was more than a moment of celebration. It was a reminder of the impact they have had not only on Riverside, but on us as an organization.

On the evening of Saturday, November 8th, 2025, Human Migration Institute (HMI) commemorated ten years of Home, Hope, and Voices of Humanity with our inaugural gala at the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture. This once in a decade celebration brought together sponsors, staff, newcomer families, volunteers, and special guests in one shared space of beauty, memory, and meaning.
For years, newcomer women from Afghanistan were told they couldn't go to school. Their education was taken from them under various circumstances. Imagine what it looks like when they finally get the chance to start over and go to school?
From library visits to painting masterpieces, HMI’s second annual Summer Camp brought joy, learning, and connection to newcomer children in Riverside. With games, reading sessions, and art that will shine at our 10-year gala, this week was more than just fun—it was a celebration of growth, friendship, and community.
We are thrilled to celebrate Asma, a shining star in the HMI community and an inspiring young leader. Asma recently made history in her family by becoming the first woman to graduate high school in the United States—a milestone that marks just the beginning of her journey.
April 6th, 2025, for 22 participants in HMI’s Refugee Career Pathways (RCP) Program, was the start of a day full of firsts: their first time on a train, their first visit to Los Angeles, and their first chance to experience the city’s cultural landmarks not as outsiders—but as welcomed guests.
