Elevating Careers: Inside Our Advanced Certifications & Interview Strategies Workshop
At Human Migration Institute (HMI), we believe that career advancement is not just about access to opportunities, it’s about having the tools, confidence, and support to pursue them.
This week, our Refugee Career Pathways (RCP) team hosted a workshop titled “Elevate Your Career: Advanced Certifications & Interview Strategies,” bringing together clients ready to take the next step in their professional journeys.
Building Pathways Through Certifications
The first half of the session focused on advanced certification opportunities and how they can strengthen long-term career growth. Participants explored pathways to industry-recognized credentials through platforms like Coursera and eCornell, gaining insight into how these certifications can enhance their resumes and open doors to new opportunities.
Through our partnership with Upwardly Global, HMI clients are able to access these certification pathways at no cost. Beyond technical training, Upwardly Global also provides valuable guidance on navigating the U.S. workplace, helping clients better understand professional expectations, communication styles, and career progression.
This partnership allows us to go beyond short-term support and invest in long-term, sustainable career development.
Strengthening Interview Skills Through Practice
In the second half of the workshop, participants engaged in an interactive interview skills lab designed to build confidence and practical communication skills.
Rather than focusing on lectures, the session centered on discussion, reflection, and real examples. Participants observed and analyzed different interview responses—identifying what works, what doesn’t, and why. Together, the group explored strategies for answering common interview questions, including how to:
Clearly introduce their professional background
Connect their skills to a specific role
Share real examples of problem-solving
Explain international experience in a way U.S. employers understand
Maintain professionalism when discussing past roles
A key focus of the session was helping participants translate their existing experience into language that resonates across different professional and cultural contexts.
Creating Space for Growth and Confidence
Workshops like this are about more than building skills—they are about creating a supportive environment where participants can reflect, ask questions, and practice without pressure.
Many of our RCP clients bring extensive international experience, ranging from surgeons to HR managers. At the same time, they are navigating complex career transitions, including recertification processes and new cultural expectations in the U.S. job market. This often happens while balancing multiple responsibilities, such as supporting their families, participating in training programs, and building a new life in the Riverside community. By providing structured, interactive spaces like this, we aim to make the process more accessible, supportive, and empowering.
Looking Ahead
As part of our ongoing RCP programming, we will continue offering workshops that combine practical tools with guided support—from certification pathways to mock interviews and one-on-one coaching.
We are grateful to our partners, including Upwardly Global, for helping make these opportunities possible and for their continued commitment to supporting newcomer professionals.
Together, we are building pathways not just to employment, but to meaningful, long-term careers, supporting clients in reaching their full potential beyond self-sufficiency.
