Supporting Afghan Refugee Families and Their Needs
In the wake of the turmoil in Afghanistan, the Inland Empire, particularly the Riverside and Moreno Valley area, has become a safe haven for Afghan refugee families seeking refuge and a fresh start. Understanding their urgent needs, particularly in the areas of legal immigration support, employment, and housing, is crucial for fostering their successful integration into the local community. In this blog post, we explore how the Human Migration Institute (HMI) plans to provide assistance and create a supportive environment for Afghan refugees in the Inland Empire, with the help of donations and grants.
During our most recent Listening Session & Donation Giveaway event, Afghan refugee families in the Inland Empire had the opportunity to come together and engage in open dialogue. This facilitated a space for them to express their needs, challenges, and aspirations, allowing us to gain deeper insights into their unique circumstances. In addition to fostering dialogue, we introduced our ESL Summer Camp program, which aims to empower individuals with language skills and cultural fluency for successful integration. We also provided hygiene kits to those in need, recognizing the importance of personal well-being. These initiatives reflect our commitment to supporting Afghan refugee families and creating a welcoming community where everyone's needs are heard and addressed.

Addressing Legal Immigration Support:
One of the pressing needs that emerged from the dialogue was the demand for legal immigration support. Many families expressed the need for assistance with immigration applications, parolee interviews, asylum applications, permanent residency, and citizenship. They highlighted the importance of expert guidance to navigate the complex immigration processes and ensure a smooth transition into their new home. HMI recognizes the importance of supporting them through the immigration process, including applications, interviews, asylum claims, permanent residency, and citizenship.
Empowering with Employment and Housing:
Stability and self-sufficiency are essential for refugee families to thrive in their new environment. Employment and housing emerged as other crucial factors for the stability and self-sufficiency of these families. They expressed the need for support in securing affordable housing options and connecting with available resources. Financial assistance programs and guidance with county applications were also identified as essential in easing their transition and ensuring access to vital services.
Promoting Understanding and Inclusion:
Our dialogue revealed that building bridges of understanding and empathy between the Afghan refugee families and the wider community is crucial for their successful integration. Many families expressed the desire for a welcoming and inclusive environment where they can feel accepted and valued. By organizing community events and initiatives, we can create opportunities for meaningful interactions, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.
HMI's Plan for the Future and Donation/Grant Utilization:
With the help of donations and grants, HMI aims to provide the necessary resources and support to empower Afghan refugees and promote their successful integration. Here's how HMI plans to utilize these funds:
1. Learning materials and training resources:
HMI will develop culturally adapted educational materials to enhance the learning experience of ORR-eligible adults, youth, and adolescents in Riverside County. These resources will support the Community ESL and Math Tutoring Program, enabling individuals to improve their language and academic skills.
2. Community workshop presenter speakers:
Funds from the grant will be allocated to invite expert speakers who will conduct workshops on relevant topics. These sessions will provide valuable insights and knowledge, empowering resettled ethnic communities. Behavioral Health Workshops, for example, will focus on coping skills, resilience building, and creating a sense of community for those impacted by migration and displacement. Speakers will also be able to help connect Afghan refugees with available resources and financial assistance programs, HMI aims to alleviate the stress of finding stable housing and facilitate their integration into the workforce.
3. Community ESL Program teachers:
HMI plans to allocate funds to pay Community ESL Program teachers. This investment will ensure the provision of high-quality language instruction, enabling individuals to improve their English proficiency and facilitate successful integration.
4. Legal service individuals and fees:
A portion of the grant money will be dedicated to employing legal service professionals who will provide direct support and representation to Afghan families. Additionally, HMI aims to partially fund legal service fees on behalf of families facing financial constraints, ensuring equal access to legal assistance.
