School Navigation Volunteers

Step up to support newcomer families as they embark on their educational journey in a new community. be a guide for families through the school enrollment process, helping them understand the local education system and access essential resources.

 

Scope of Work:

Navigating the educational system can be particularly challenging for newly-arrived families who may be unfamiliar with local procedures and resources. As a School Navigation Volunteer with HMI, you will play a pivotal role in easing this transition. Your involvement will be essential in guiding these families through the school enrollment process, ensuring their children are enrolled in the right schools and have access to necessary educational resources.

By volunteering, you will help families understand the local education system, including school options, registration procedures, and available support services. Your assistance will empower them to secure a quality education for their children and make informed decisions about their educational journey.

Your support not only helps with practical tasks such as completing forms and meeting deadlines but also provides emotional reassurance. Many families are navigating a new environment with limited understanding of how things work, and your clear, compassionate guidance will help them feel more confident and less overwhelmed. This support is crucial for fostering a positive start in their new community, ensuring that both children and parents can focus on building a brighter future.


Time Commitment:

12 Hours Per Month, on an as needed basis

Responsibilities:

  • Guide Enrollment: Assist families with the school registration process, including filling out forms, understanding school policies, and meeting necessary requirements.

  • Educational System Orientation: Help families understand the local education system, including school options, transportation, and available resources.

  • Advocate for Needs: Work with schools and families to address any specific needs or concerns that arise during the enrollment process.

  • Provide Information: Offer information about educational programs, extracurricular activities, and community resources that may benefit the students and their families.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with Diverse Populations: Ability to work effectively with people from various cultural backgrounds.

  • Strong Communication Skills: Clear and empathetic communication to explain complex processes and provide support.

  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and ensure accurate and timely assistance.

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Understanding of the challenges faced by refugee families and a commitment to providing compassionate support.

2. Prepare a copy of your Driver’s License and Car Insurance to submit.
