Employment Development Volunteers

Scope of Work:
As an Employment Development Volunteer with HMI, you will have a direct impact on the lives of newcomers by helping them secure meaningful employment and develop the skills necessary to thrive in the job market. This role is essential in supporting refugees as they rebuild their lives and work toward self-sufficiency in their new community.
Time Commitment:
2-4 hours per week (as needed)
Minimum 6-month commitment, 2-4 hours per week
Location:
Local job centers, virtual platforms, or HMI office
Location of support provided will be based on the need of the client.
Responsibilities:
Job Search Support: Assist refugees in searching for job opportunities that align with their skills and career aspirations. This includes helping them navigate online job boards, filling out applications, and following up with potential employers.
Resume and Cover Letter Assistance: Work one-on-one with refugees to create or refine their resumes and cover letters, ensuring they effectively highlight their qualifications and experiences.
Interview Preparation: Conduct mock interviews, provide constructive feedback, and share tips on interview techniques, helping refugees feel confident and prepared for real job interviews.
Skill Development: Facilitate workshops or one-on-one sessions on various job skills, such as workplace etiquette, professional communication, and time management.
Networking: Connect refugees with local job fairs, networking events, and professional organizations to expand their employment opportunities.
Ongoing Support: Offer continuous guidance and support as refugees navigate the employment process, providing encouragement and advice to help them overcome challenges.
Qualifications:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Experience in human resources, career counseling, or related fields is beneficial but not required.
Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting refugees in their journey toward self-sufficiency.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Cultural sensitivity and a respectful approach to working with individuals from various backgrounds.
Basic knowledge of job search strategies, resume writing, and interview techniques.
Familiarity with local employment resources and networks is a plus.
