HMI at the Afghan Support Center: Building a Stronger Future Together

A Haven of Hope and Assistance

Last week, Human Migration Institute (HMI) was honored to participate in a significant event that is a beacon of hope and support for Afghan refugees in the United States: the Afghan Support Center in Anaheim, California. Held at Anaheim Marriott's Platinum Ballroom, this multi-day event offered comprehensive assistance to our Afghan friends, helping them find their footing in their new country.

Uniting for a Common Cause

The Afghan Support Center, organized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), brought together various federal, state, and local agencies, as well as numerous service providers including HMI. Our aim? To ensure that every Afghan has the necessary resources to successfully integrate into American society. From April 16 to April 20, attendees had access to a wealth of services such as on-site legal assistance, housing, employment, and medical services, all at no cost. Important educational services like adult education and school enrollment were also provided alongside mental wellness counseling and food assistance.

Recognizing the diverse needs of the Afghan community, the event also offered interpretation services in Dari and Pashto, prayer areas, children’s play spaces, and even transportation. These thoughtful additions ensured that the event was accessible and accommodating to everyone, reflecting the comprehensive approach needed for successful integration.

A Special Collaboration with ORR: Learning and Growing Together

A highlight for our team was the Listening Session hosted by HMI in collaboration with the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). This session was particularly impactful as it focused on the experiences of Afghan women and children who arrived during Operation Allies Welcome. It was a privilege to provide a platform where they could voice their challenges and successes directly to influential leaders from the ORR. This dialogue is crucial for shaping future programs and policies that truly reflect the needs of Afghan families.

The Listening Session was not just a time for conversation but also a moment for joy and engagement. It included activities and games for children of all ages, making it a fun and inclusive event. The feedback collected will be invaluable in enhancing the support structures for our Afghan friends.

Looking Forward

As we reflect on the success of the Afghan Support Center, we at HMI are more committed than ever to our mission of aiding refugees through education, community building, and seamless integration. Events like these are vital not just for providing immediate help but for fostering long-term relationships among community members and between refugees and their new environments.

We thank all the Afghan families and organizers who made this event a resounding success.
