Beyond the Label: World Refugee Day 2026
Beyond the Label: World Refugee Day 2026
This year we looked at how "refugee" is a label so powerful that it can erase everything that came before it.
A teacher becomes a refugee.
A mother becomes a refugee.
A student becomes a refugee.

Yet those identities never disappear. Behind every refugee story is a person with dreams, talents, relationships, and aspirations that existed long before they were forced to leave home.
At the Human Migration Institute, World Refugee Day is an opportunity to recognize the many journeys of people seeking safety and a better future. More importantly, it is a chance to celebrate the people behind those journeys.
This year, our event centered on a simple but powerful idea: our circumstances should never define the limits of our dreams.
Watching Rule Breakers, I couldn't help but think about how easy it is to forget the lives that existed before displacement. The film tells the story of young women who refuse to let extraordinary obstacles stand in the way of their education and aspirations. Their journey serves as a reminder that while conflict and displacement may interrupt a person's path, they do not erase their potential.
That belief is what drives HMI's work every day.
We are committed to walking alongside refugee and newcomer families as they rebuild their lives because behind every label is a person deserving of opportunity, dignity, and belonging. Sometimes, all someone needs is the support to begin writing the next chapter of their story.
On June 20, more than 45 members of our community gathered at the Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts in Riverside for a private screening of Rule Breakers followed by a community discussion. Together, we reflected on the resilience of refugee communities and the importance of creating spaces where stories can be heard, understood, and valued.
The evening reminded us that the refugee story is never the whole story.
It is only one chapter.
We are especially grateful to our panelists for their willingness to share deeply personal chapters of their lives. Their honesty gave our community the opportunity to move beyond headlines and labels and better understand the realities, resilience, and hope that shape so many refugee journeys.
Their stories resonated deeply with those in attendance. During the discussion, one participant shared:
"Thank you for your willingness to tell your story. I also understand that your stories hold a great deal of sorrow. You have experienced a great deal of loss and grief that most of us cannot understand unless there are opportunities like this, where those of us who have not had those experiences are able to put ourselves in your shoes, even if only for a moment, and walk the path you have taken."
Moments like these remind us why World Refugee Day matters. When we create space for people to share their stories, we move beyond labels and begin to see one another through empathy, understanding, and our shared humanity.
Help Keep Learning Alive
One of those stories continues in Torbalı, Türkiye.
For the children in HMI's International Torbalı Program, they are not asking to be known as refugees. They are asking for the same things children everywhere hope for: a classroom, friends, someone who believes in them, and the opportunity to dream.
Since 2019, HMI has partnered with Syrian refugee families living in the Torbalı, where many children face barriers to education due to displacement, transportation challenges, and the realities of seasonal agricultural work. Through educational programming offered three times each week, children have access to consistent learning opportunities and a safe environment where they can continue learning despite these challenges.
This year, we shared the story of Torbalı during World Refugee Day because these children remind us that dreams continue long after displacement.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, we raised more than $500 through ticket donations and direct contributions to help sustain educational opportunities for children in Torbalı. These funds will directly support teacher stipends, transportation, educational materials, and weekly learning sessions for the children participating in the program.
As HMI continues navigating changes in funding, our commitment to refugee and newcomer communities remains unchanged. While World Refugee Day is observed once a year, our work continues every day—and so does the need.
If this story resonates with you, we invite you to help keep learning alive.
Your gift to HMI's Torbalı Program helps ensure that children have the opportunity to learn, grow, and continue dreaming beyond the circumstances they did not choose.
Because being a refugee is never the end of someone's story.
It's simply the beginning of something new—and together, we can help write what comes next.
