Provide a warm and welcoming temporary home for newly-arrived families. As a HomeStay Volunteer with HMI, you'll offer crucial support during their transition, showing them that our community is inclusive and ready to help.
Scope of Work:
Are you ready to make a profound impact on the lives of newly-arrived families? As a Temporary Housing/HomeStay Volunteer with HMI, you will open your home to newcomer families for up to two weeks while we work to secure their long-term housing. This temporary support is crucial as it allows us the necessary time to prepare their permanent home, ensuring it is fully furnished and ready for their arrival.
Your role is essential in providing not just a place to stay, but a message of compassion and acceptance. Many refugees have experienced significant trauma and displacement. By hosting them in your home, you demonstrate that our community is inclusive and welcoming, offering a vital sense of stability and warmth during their transition.
Time Commitment:
Up to two weeks, with the possibility of shorter stays as needed.
Open your home for a family for up to two weeks as the HMI staff secure long-term housing.
Responsibilities:
Create a safe and comfortable living space for the refugee family.
Assist them in navigating their new environment and community.
Coordinate with HMI housing specialists to ensure a smooth transition to their permanent residence.
Offer support and guidance as they begin to adapt to life in the U.S.
Communicate any needs or concerns to HMI staff promptly.
Qualifications:
Strong intercultural communication skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
Proven ability to demonstrate patience, understanding, and flexibility.
Ability to provide a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.
Willingness to work with, and take direction from, HMI staff.
Demonstrated ability to work independently while maintaining regular communication with HMI.
Familiarity with trauma-informed practices is preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively in English; additional fluency in one of the following languages is desirable but not required: Spanish, Dari, Pashto, native Guatemalan languages.
