Building Bridges: A Summer of Connection and Joy for Riverside's Newest Neighbors

Last week, as the sun set on four incredible days, Human Migration Institute concluded its second annual summer camp in partnership with The Grove Community Church of Riverside. It was more than just a camp; it was threads of interfaith collaboration, cultural exchange, and pure, unadulterated joy. For 65 local refugee family members, alongside participants from other immigrant communities, such as our Chinese and Korean neighbors, this camp became a temporary home, a classroom, and a playground, all rolled into one.

The energy was beyond expectations. Nearly 100 volunteers, ranging in age from a spirited 6-year-old to a wise 75-year-old, poured their hearts into making this experience unforgettable. On behalf of everyone at HMI, I want to express our sincere gratitude to The Grove Community Church. Their partnership is not just a collaboration; it's a testament to the power of community coming together to embrace one another.

Tailored Programs for Every Age

The camp is designed to cater to the diverse needs of all participants. For adults aged 18 and over, we significantly improved our ESL conversation classes. These weren't just lessons; they were opportunities for meaningful interaction, facilitated by patient and understanding volunteers who narrowed language barriers with grace and creativity, often using images to help adults share their needs, talents, and dreams. The genuine friendships that blossomed between volunteers and adult students were truly heartwarming to witness.

The children found their calling on the soccer field. Our soccer program, designed for children aged 6 to 18, was a huge hit. They learned drills, practiced teamwork, and, most importantly, had a blast playing matches. Many children shared at the end that they had made new friends and absolutely loved their coaches, praising their positive encouragement in mastering new skills.

For our youngest campers, those under 6, a dedicated childcare center provided a safe and nurturing environment. Volunteers engaged them in physical activities, quiet exploration, and gentle introductions to English and the concept of schooling. It was a wonderful space for them to play, learn, and feel secure.

Beyond Language: Navigating American Systems with Confidence

One of the most impactful benefits of this year's camp was the integration of The Grove Community Church's modern registration system. For our refugee participants, many of whom have faced challenging and traumatic experiences, this system provided an opportunity to familiarize themselves with American school safety protocols.

Initially, it was a challenge, especially for adults with limited literacy. The concept of memorizing phone numbers for identification purposes was new, and the check-in/check-out process required careful attention. Yet, within just two days, their resilience shone through. They quickly grasped the importance of the system, understanding that it represented a modernized and secure layer of protection. This exposure wasn't just about practical skills; it was about building trust and understanding that the community is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment as they establish their new lives in the United States. It's a critical step in closing the gap between past traumas and a future of secure protection.

The Power of Family Connection and the Spark of Joy

A significant new addition to this year's camp was a daily thirty-minute family engagement activity. The goal was simple yet profound: to reinforce teamwork among family members, encouraging them to look beyond the hardships of their immigration journeys and instead focus on having fun and accomplishing goals together.

And it worked. I captured moments that brought tears to my eyes. I witnessed the first and biggest smiles from many of our refugee participants, particularly the women from Afghanistan, who had often been shy and uncomfortable in public. Seeing them laugh freely, truly having fun for what felt like the first time, underscored how precious joy is for HMI participants. These moments reinforced HMI's mission in community building, highlighting how essential community support is for the wellness of newcomers as they find new life and opportunity here in Riverside.

A Lasting Impact

As the camp drew to a close, we asked participants for their biggest takeaway. Their responses were a powerful affirmation of our efforts. Many expressed sincere gratitude for the community's support, emphasizing how it made them laugh and feel genuinely happy. Children excitedly talked about new friends made on the soccer field and their appreciation for their encouraging coaches. Our adult ESL students thanked their volunteers for being welcoming, patient, and understanding of language barriers, creating an environment where they could express themselves and forge new, ongoing friendships.

This summer camp was more than just a series of activities; it was a beacon of hope, a bridge to new beginnings, and a celebration of human connection. It showcased the incredible impact that a collaborative, compassionate community can have on those building new lives after unimaginable challenges. We look forward to continuing this vital partnership with The Grove Community Church in bringing in even more smiles, friendships, and a stronger, more welcoming Riverside for all.
