Celebrating Growth & Community: World Refugee Day 2024
On Saturday, June 22nd, 2024, Andulka Park was the vibrant backdrop for HMI's World Refugee Day event and Certificate Ceremony, a day dedicated to honoring the growth, resilience, and achievements of our newcomer community. The event combined a Certificate Ceremony with a delightful community potluck picnic, creating an atmosphere of celebration and unity.
Despite the sweltering heat in Riverside, the spirit of the day remained unwavering as families, volunteers, and staff gathered under the shade of the park’s trees. The lively backdrop of baseball games added to the festive atmosphere, as we came together to recognize the accomplishments of our program participants.
Throughout the afternoon, HMI proudly awarded over 40 certificates to individuals of all ages who had participated in our various programs, including our Community ESL Classes, Financial Literacy Workshops, and the After School Learning Center for children under 12. Each certificate was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our participants, and each award was personalized by their teachers to reflect their unique talents and achievements.
As we called up each participant, the park was filled with smiles, laughter, and even a few happy tears. Small gifts were presented alongside the certificates to celebrate their progress toward self-sufficiency and sustainability. The joy of the day was palpable, and the sense of accomplishment was truly inspiring.
The event ended with a potluck where families brought a delectable array of traditional Afghan foods to share. As everyone sat together, savoring the delicious dishes and engaging in lively conversations, it was clear that the day had successfully brought our community closer together. The connections made and friendships forged over shared meals and stories left everyone eagerly anticipating the next HMI community event.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to making this day special. Your presence and participation made World Refugee Day a memorable celebration of community, resilience, and unity.
